[Webinar] Anemia and Celiac Disease: A Hidden Connection

Did you know that anemia can be a symptom of celiac disease?

Often overlooked, anemia can be a significant indicator of underlying health issues. In a 2023 webinar presented by Immundiagnostik AG, Dr. Sonja Bastian highlights the connection between anemia and celiac disease. Celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder triggered by gluten consumption, can damage the small intestine, hindering the absorption of vital nutrients like iron.

The study revealed several potential causes of anemia, including:

  • Iron deficiency: This can arise from poor iron absorption due to celiac disease, pregnancy, heavy menstrual bleeding, or insufficient iron intake.
  • Vitamin deficiencies: Specifically, vitamin B12 is crucial for iron metabolism. A lack of this vitamin, often caused by dietary restrictions, alcohol abuse, or certain medical conditions, can contribute to anemia.
  • Chronic illnesses: Diseases like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), liver or kidney failure, and chronic infections can impact iron levels and lead to anemia.
  • Blood loss: Gastrointestinal bleeding, heavy menstrual periods, or other internal bleeding can cause anemia.

While these are just some of the potential causes, it’s clear that anemia is a complex issue. This presents an opportunity for research labs to further investigate celiac disease to support early detection and management, while also promoting the prevention of complications and improved clinical outcomes.
